Bulgaria is one of Europe’s least-visited and most rewarding destinations: Sofia’s mix of Byzantine churches and Roman ruins beneath the Vitosha mountain, the rose-valley interior, the Rhodope hills with medieval monasteries, and a Black Sea coast of long sandy beaches at Sunny Beach and the preserved old towns of Sozopol and Nessebar.
It’s a four-season country: skiing at Bansko and Borovets in winter, spring hiking in the Rhodopes and Pirin mountains, summer Black Sea beaches, and autumn wine harvest in the Thracian Valley. Prices are among the lowest in the EU, and distances between attractions are short.
